Sugarcane grows along the banks of rivers and lakes, in different biomes. It grows up to 3 blocks high, rather quickly, on blocks of earth or sand. All mobs can pass through reeds, but water does not flow through it. A reed is necessary to create paper, because without it you cannot make a book, and therefore an enchanting table. Sugar made from cane is used in potions and food preparation
